This week I am in Florida, so the wonderful Amber is taking over kids church today. The kids were invited to wear their favorite teams colors. They filled out a survey which had predictions from the BIG game on it. Such as which team will score the first point, which team will win the coin toss, and which team will win the Super Bowl. To get all psyched up they did their own warm ups to get their blood pumpin' - had a football toss contest - and a cheer off, where each team came up with their own cheer.
Their lesson was very fitting - Facing the Giants.
They started out by talking about what football players wear to protect themselves and how the pad and helmet protect them. A younger child was chosen to come up and try on football pad and a helmet, and they were asked if it looked as though this stuff would protect them like they do the football players. They decided that this stuff wouldn't protect him very well because they were to heavy for him to loose on him and just to big for him.
Which of course reminds us of the story in the Bible, David and Goliath.
David was just a young boy, he was suppose to stay home and care for the sheep while his older brothers were at war against the Philistines.
Remember the Philistines were big people, they had a Giant man named Goliath who came out each and every day and wanted to know who would fight him. He would shout to the Isrealites, in his deep, growly voice, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man who will fight me. If he is able to defeat me we will become you servants, but if I defeat him you will become our servants.”
With this the Isrealites were terrified! We all know the story ends by little David going to where the soldiers were camping out and saw what was happening, he approached the king and said "I will fight for you." The king tryed to get David to wear his battle armor, but it just didn't fit David. David faced the giant with just stones and a sling - and WON!

They ended the day with a Super Bowl snack, chips and salsa.
